Local Project

Overview

EWB-UConn has partnered with the Town of Coventry to lead a community service initiative in Creaser Park. Over time, the garden in Creaser Park had the pathways overgrown, fences surrounding the site were aged and covered in lichen, and the composting area was heavily overgrown. Additionally, decomposed woodchips had mixed into the soil throughout the garden pathways, creating maintenance and accessibility challenges. This project focused on restoring and improving the community garden at Creaser Park, a valuable public space used by residents for gardening, education, and recreation.

Our Progress

In March 2026, EWB-UConn conducted an assessment trip to Creaser Park to evaluate the condition of the site and identify the work required for restoration. During the visit, team members measured the volume of material requiring excavation and assessed the fencing that would need cleaning and staining.

Following the assessment, EWB-UConn worked with Coventry’s project engineers, EWB-CT, local volunteers, and members of the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) to complete the revitalization effort. Working across 21 garden plots, five inches of old woodchips, soil, weeds, rocks, and other accumulated material from the pathways were excavated. EWB-UConn and volunteers installed the new geotextile fabric to improve long-term weed control and transported woodchips throughout the site to create renewed walking paths. EWB-UConn successfully restored approximately 3,100 square feet of garden pathways, improving accessibility and helping preserve an important community resource for residents.
